Syracuse.com: Two Syracuse Disability-Focused Nonprofit Agencies Merging
Two Syracuse nonprofit agencies that serve people with disabilities merging
Syracuse, N.Y. -- Two Syracuse nonprofit agencies that serve people with disabilities and other health issues are merging.
Enable and Transitional Living Services announced today they will join forces to form a new agency serving people with developmental disabilities, behavioral health issues and other health concerns. The two agencies will form a not-for-profit corporation under a new name.
TLS board President Brian Hoke and Enable board President Marvin Reed issued a joint statement announcing the merger.
"By combining the resources of TLS and Enable, the new entity will be better positioned to meet the growing needs of the community in an era of serious government and tax-based funding shortfalls," the statement said. "The boards of both organizations have recognized a need to achieve efficient and effective use of taxpayer and donor dollars to enhance individualized, person-centered services that will create positive social change."
Combined, the agencies employ more than 900 Central New Yorkers, operate on a budget of nearly $30 million and serve more than 3,000 people annually.
The organizations began merger discussions earlier this year.
Prudence York, executive director of Enable, will assume executive managerial responsibilities for TLS beginning July 1. She will become executive director of the new agency when it is formed in the next 12 to 18 months.
Since 1949 Enable has served people with developmental and physical disabilities. TLS, founded in 1974, serves people with developmental disabilities, mental health issues and truamatic brain injuries.
