The Snow Show is a snow party and gallery exhibit featuring artworks by the Public Art Task Force collective and friends. Coinciding with the event, there will also be a snow sculpture extravaganza on the front lawn at the Most on Saturday the 23rd from noon - melt. All are welcome to participate, bring your own tools and supplies to help create a great sculpture!

2012 brings new focus for 40 Below

The Syracuse Post-Standard reported about 40 Below:
They've never before put on a big concert, so the New Year's Eve party featuring Joe Driscoll at the Landmark Theatre represents a bold new splash for 40 Below, the seven-year-old Syracuse young professionals group.

That's not all that's new: Leaders say the organization will seek a permanent downtown presence in 2012, while charting a slightly altered course, based on the recognition that hard times have withered its demographic base.

"Six months ago, we saw 40 percent unemployment with young professionals in this community," said Benjamin M. Sio, manager at 40 Below. "We have all these students that are graduating from colleges and the universities in this area, but they're not staying here as much as they could be. .. Supporting them has become a main focus."

Formed in late 2004 after a high-profile summit attracted 600 people to the Oncenter, the nonprofit group has sought to stop or slow the exodus of young professionals from Central New York. It has a membership list of 3,000 but an active base of a few hundred volunteers, who work on projects ranging from building restorations to public art.

Next year, organizers hope to open a "co-working space" somewhere downtown. The space, a concept modeled in other cities, would host group functions and serve as a shared office location for members.

"We're gearing it as a place where individuals and professionals can come," said R.J. Sherman, a member of the location search committee. "If they don't have an office downtown, they can use it to meet with a customer or a client. We're looking to partition it, but also keep more of a modular space, so 40 Below can hold events there."

Sherman said the group has narrowed its search to a few places, based on the usual concerns: Location and expense. The group believes it has something else to bring a landlord.

"We're looking for a low-cost or no-cost kind of lease agreement, in exchange for bettering that space for the building owners and offering something for the community," said Ashlyn Maguire, a fellow committee member.

Since its launch, 40 Below has seen a relatively constant turnover of members, a situation described by its leadership as a natural consequence of the people it seeks to tap. By nature, young professionals are less settled and more prone to move between cities. The goal is to grow the Syracuse community and thus spur more young professionals to establish roots.

"People often first get involved as singles," Sio said. "They get married, they have kids, and they're not able to give 20 hours a week of volunteer time, as they did in the past. We're experienced in having people pass through. That's part of the organization. That's part of the nature of our leadership."

He said the Syracuse group, during its seven years, has run about 75 steering committees on various projects, and hosts a monthly series of speed networking sessions and speakers. The group receives grant money from CNY Works, a local nonprofit, which draws federal funds.

Sio said there is no age requirement for membership: Anyone can join -- even if 40 or above.

"We don't have a 'graduation,'" he said, with a smile.

Still, 2012 will have a commencement of sorts: The first-annual New Year's Eve BeLOW OUT party. Headlining will be Driscoll, a Syracuse native whose beatbox rap has gained an international following. A full house at the Landmark could generate $20,000 to $40,000 for the nonprofit, a huge boost to plans.

"We're really excited about it," Sio said. "We're hoping for a great year."

Syracuse's 40 Below revamps its organizational structure

Syacuse.com reported an “organizational redesign process” is bringing sweeping changes for the Syracuse-based young professionals group 40 Below.

The changes include 11 new steering committee members and two additional paid staff members, whose salaries are being paid from a grant through CNY Works, a local nonprofit that receives federal funding, according to Ben Sio, manager of 40 Below.

“It is a reorganization in terms of staff and leadership,” Sio said. “We have it all almost completely in place. We just need a treasurer.”

The two new full-time staff members were hired to “develop new ventures to serve the young demographic professional,” according to 40 Below. They are Ashley Aurilio, who recently graduated from SUNY Cortland, who was named marketing and communications assistant, and Andrea Bianchi, a recent graduate of Binghamton University, who was named task force liaison.

The 40 Below steering committee also recently elected Stephanie Crockett as the new chairwoman. Crockett is a management supervisor at Eric Mower and Associates.

Sio said the leadership of 40 Below, which promotes Central New York as a place to live and work and has 2,500 members, has been planning the reorganization since March.

Several openings were created on the steering committee as people left the group and one-year terms expired, said Sio. The group decided to replace most of the steering committee before fall.

“We felt we should use this time to reorganize, get some new energy and new blood,” said Sio. “We realized at that time the organization needed to refresh itself to do as much as it can for 40 Below.”

The organization promotes civic engagement, public arts and regional marketing.

“We’ve always prided ourselves on having a tangible impact on the community,” said Sio.

The new steering committee members of 40 Below include:

• Brenda Cannizzaro, marketing support coordinator for Foundation for Upstate Medical University.

• Micha Crook, registration assistant for the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau and co-founder of Monthly Adventures Productions.

• Lauren Crossett, a financial services professional at Central New York Agency LLC.

• Ryan Goodfellow, a leasing and sales representative at JF Real Estate.

• Aaron Gould, a student at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

• Ashlyn Maguire, a licensed commercial property and casualty broker at First Niagara Risk Management.

• Steven Marshall, a lawyer with Harris Beach.

• Todd Pinsky, a lawyer with Pinsky & Skandalis.

• Madison Quinn, program coordinator for Onondaga County’s Save the Rain Program.

• Ronald Tascarella, an associate relationship manager and banking officer at M&T Bank.

40 Below News and 2010 in Review!

My Fellow 40 Belowers,

As we look forward to the excitement of 2011, I just wanted to take a couple of moments to highlight 40 Below's successes over the past 12 months:

Lipe Art Park, a public art installation park along Fayette St in the Near West Side, has grown! Local artist Brendan Rose installed the Art Shark in May and Josh Mushaty was commissioned to paint a mural on the Shark entitled the "Rebirth of Syracuse." The Stewards of Lipe Art Park (SLAP) have developed a phased master plan to grow the park (viewable at www.lipeartpark.com) and has secured $12,000 in grant funding to start implementation.

This past Summer the Public Arts Task Force (PATF) was a key partner in ArtsWeek in Downtown Syracuse as they brought together over 30 local artists for a spontaneous public gallery show called ArtStrong. ArtStrong transformed a vacant store front on Warren St. into a pop-up gallery from July to August and hosted a 5 @ Dime Party, which sold local artwork at the low cost of $10. PATF also helped lead the 2nd annual Syracuse Mp3 Experiment, which brought together improv enthusiasts for an event that was part guerrilla theater, part flash mob, and all fun.

The Civic Engagement Task Force (CETF) held exciting monthly meetings on the 1st Monday of every month and provided the opportunity for 40 Belowers to learn more about Syracuse First, the new SUNY Oswego Metro Center, Food Bank of Central New York, the American Heart Association, Assault City Roller Derby, and the Humane Association. CETF also hosted informal social networking receptions on the 3rd Monday of every month; past locations included World Lounge, Dolce Vita, Funk N Waffles, Al's Wine and Whiskey Lounge, and the new Dey Brother's Building. Finally, CETF hosted its fourth Successful Involvement Fair in May, which allowed 40 Belowers to directly network with over 30 local non profits.

The It's All Here Syracuse Task Force had a great 2010, with outstanding participation from new and returning members, and a focus on bringing to its members some of the great things Syracuse has to offer. In 2010, It's All Here developed partnerships with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Syracuse Stage, and the Syracuse Opera, offering discount tickets and pre-performance happy hours for 40 Below members. Attendance far exceeded expectations, and 40 Below looks forward to long-term relationships with these incredible cultural organizations and more in the future. It's All Here also led a research effort with Syracuse University that targeted students and 40 Belowers to learn about perceptions of our city and what 40 Below can do to better engage our constituents. Currently in development is a brand new website for It's All Here: www.itsallheresyracuse.com the new site will be launched in the coming months and will feature more robust information about all of the great resources and activities in Syracuse, and how to get involved. Additionally, It's All Here is working on a new TV spot and extended-length web-based videos to post on our new site and facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Syracuse-Its-all-Here-campaign/39838064422). Look out for an invite to a launch party for these great new assets to promote our fabulous city!


Instead of hosting our annual Summit in 2010, 40 Below decided to partner with Pipeline 4 Progress-the Young Professional group in the Southern Tier-in planning a statewide Summit on behalf of We Live NY-an organization of young professional leaders from across the state working to attract and retain young talent in both upstate and downstate communities.

This conference, the 2011 We Live NY Summit, will take place from March 24 - 26 at the Statler Hotel at Cornell University. 40 Below and It’s All Here are proud to announce a partnership with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra (SSO) to bring you the “4 for 40” program – a subscription to four SSO concerts in the 2010-2011 season for only $40. More information is forthcoming on www.itsallheresyracuse.com. You can also learn more about the program at the SSO’s free summer concerts: Saturday, July 10th in Armory Square Thursday, July 29th in Clinton Square. Both shows start at 8pm with pre-show activities starting at 6:30pm.

Public Art Task Force

Friday, July 30 - 5 & Dime, PATF Fundraiser and Awareness Party
The 5 & Dime party/happy hour is an event to raise both awareness and funds for the PATF. We are collecting a wide range of artwork, donated by local artists, that will be on display and available for purchase during a happy hour/party the Thursday or Friday of Arts Week. Each piece will be priced at $10 (the Dime) and donation at the door will be $5 (the 5.) The event will be held from 5 -8 pm in a storefront at 451 S. Warren St.

Saturday, July 31 - Mp3 Experiment
PATF will be conducting an Mp3 Experiment as part of Arts Week. The Mp3 Experiment is a public performance involving many participants; part guerrilla theater, part flash mob. Everyone who wants to partic! ipate in the event will download a pre-recorded Mp3 file onto their personal music player. They will gather in a given location, wait for a signal, and start listening to the Mp3 at the exact same time. Details about starting location and time will be available closer to the event. July 23 - 31 (Arts Week) - Public Art Gallery Show
The PATF will be sponsoring an art show in a temporary gallery space at S. 451 Warren Street for the run of Arts Week (Friday, the 23 Monday thru Saturday, the 31st.) Local artists from the Syracuse area are being invited to submit work for the curated show.

Monday, August 2 - Ignite Syracuse
The PATF will be hosting its fouth Ignite Syracuse event on Monday, August 2th, starting at 6:30pm at Bull and Bear pub in Hanover Square. Ignite Syracuse is an evening of short talks with some special rules. In “Ignite” each speaker gets 5 minutes - but must have 20 slides and each slide must automatically progress in 15 seconds. This makes for fun and exciting presentations ranging from just about any topic the speaker can think of. Besides for that, it is just a fun evening to get together with friends, have some drinks, meet new people, and hear some creative ideas that are floating around Syracuse.
