SYRACUSE — As part of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s mission 

to improve the health and health care of the residents of the communities

 it serves, the company makes Community Health Awards adding up to

 a total of $25,000 available to help fund health and wellness programs

 in Central New York.

Nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organizations in Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s 

eight-county CNY region are invited to apply for an award of up to $4,000

 each, which can be used for a program that has clear goals to improve the 

health or health care of a specific population in the community.

“The company’s Community Health Awards demonstrate a corporate

 commitment to support local organizations that share our mission as a 

nonprofit health plan,” said Arthur Vercillo, M.D., regional president, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. “These awards complement our existing grants and sponsorships with agencies that work to enhance quality of life, including

 health status, in Central New York.”

In granting the awards, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield considers organizations 

which offer programs that focus on:

· Activities that improve the health status of the community or that 

reduce the incidence of specific diseases.
· Community-wide health education.
· Group-specific health education.
· Wellness.

To be eligible, the organization must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and located in 

Cayuga, Cortland, Jefferson, Lewis, Onondaga, Oswego, St. Lawrence or 

Tompkins County.

Awards will be made based on:

· Scope of need.
· Goals of program.
· Overall number of persons to benefit from the program.
· Positive impact on the community’s health status.

 of upstate New York, the company has supported hundreds of programs that 

are aimed at improving the health status of area residents,” said Vercillo. “We’re pleased to continue that effort by offering Community Health Awards to

The deadline for organizations to submit an application to be considered for an Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Community Health Award is June 9, 2014.

Future Fund to Award 2013 Grantee at Awards Reception

May 8, 2013 (Syracuse, NY) – The Future Fund of Central New York will award The Salvation Army’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program a $5,000 grant at its annual Grant Awards Celebration on Thursday, May 16, 2013 from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at PJ’s Pub & Grill in Syracuse. The Salvation Army was chosen from eight grant applications submitted to the fund’s focus area for 2013 – assisting veterans and their families.

The SSVF program is a collaborative effort between the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities of Onondaga County. The program helps homeless veterans and their families transition from emergency shelter into permanent housing. The Future Fund grant will allow the agency to purchase furniture for these families as they settle into their new homes.

Each year, the Future Fund members vote on a focus area for its grant award. This year’s focus area was on projects that assist veterans and their families. When all applications were received, the Fund’s members voted to choose the top three projects. Members were then invited to visit the organizations, meet staff and learn more about the applicants before choosing the final award recipient.

Since its inception in 2004, the Future Fund has awarded nine grants, totaling $45,000 to Central New York organizations. Survey on Abuse in Later Life for Professionals and Service Providers

You may be aware that Vera House received an Abuse in Later Life Grant from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women.  As part of that grant, we are surveying Professionals and Service Providers about the issue of Elder Abuse.  The results of this survey will be used to help determine what the most critical needs are for older adults (age 50 and over) in our community so that we can create or enhance services for these victims of abuse.

Grant Opportunity for Research Using CDP Data

As you may know, the Cultural Data Project's goal has always been to strengthen our sector by providing data that will help better tell the story of the sector's assets, contributions and needs. Using CDP data, regional research organizations in numerous states have been able to provide a clearer snapshot of arts and culture, demonstrating how vital a role the sector plays.

We want to make sure you are aware of a unique research grant opportunity through the new Arts & Culture Research Fund in The New York Community Trust. Supported by The Trust, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York Council for the Humanities, and The John R. Oishei Foundation of Western New York, the Arts & Culture Research Fund has announced a Request for Proposals (RFP) for research studies focused on understanding the cultural sector in New York.

Competitive Arts & Culture Research grants, ranging from $10,000 to $25,000, will be awarded to nonprofit organizations and fiscally sponsored individuals/organizations who submit proposals for projects that make use of New York State CDP data and explore significant topics related to the state's creative community.

We are excited to be working with the Arts & Culture Research Fund on this inspiring initiative and can't wait to see how the findings of the selected research projects will guide and inform conversations on the cultural sector in New York.

All proposals must be received by 12:00 pm ET on March 15, 2013 by the Arts & Culture Research Fund.

SIDS Prevention Fund Awards $3,600 Grant

February 1, 2013 (Syracuse, NY) - The Syracuse SIDS Prevention Fund, a component fund of the Central New York Community Foundation, recently awarded a $3,600 grant to The Children’s Consortium. The grant will be used to expand the SIDS prevention materials offered through the Baby Beginnings program at Crouse Hospital.

The Children’s Consortium Baby Beginnings program addresses SIDS prevention through increased community education and outreach. The program is designed for all parents of newborns through age three, with special attention given to parents in Onondaga County. It has three key components: Parenting, Literacy and Health and Wellness. Baby Beginnings is offered at Crouse Hospital and annually reaches more than 2,000 parents within 48 hours of delivering their babies. During room visits, Parent Educators provide important information on safe sleep, car safety and child development.

The Syracuse SIDS Prevention Fund, administered by the Central New York Community Foundation, was formed in 2007 as a permanent field-of-interest fund. It was established with the accumulated earnings from the Syracuse SIDS Golf Classic to support the elimination of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome through increased community awareness, including parent support programs and risk reduction education, as well as medical research.
