JOB DESCRIPTION
DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:
The Director of Development is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation, and expansion of the ongoing private fundraising program that supports operations, programs, and other purposes of the Frank H.
Hiscock Legal Aid Society (HLAS). The Director coordinates a comprehensive program to raise funds, including major gifts, annual giving, foundation and corporate grants, planned gifts, endowments and special events & campaigns, focused on attracting and increasing private support from the community, individuals, corporations, law firms, and foundations to meet the priority needs of HLAS and to build/expand stakeholder constituency. The Director of Development, in conjunction with the President/CEO, coordinates development efforts, including necessary public relations, marketing, and other external relations activities, with appropriate committees of the Board of Directors.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Director of Development reports to the President/CEO.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director of Development is responsible for raising money for HLAS through the comprehensive planning, organization, coordination, implementation, and expansion of a successful private fundraising program.
Assessing current fund raising activity and redesigning/implementing revisions based on that assessment.
Identifying, defining, prioritizing and developing objectives for private support and action plans for increasing
resources available to HLAS, to include grants, annual membership campaign, direct mail, major gifts, planned giving, corporate appeals, endowments, and special events (including the collaborative annual VOICES event.)
Providing regular status reports on gifts and fundraising activity, utilizing the Raiser’s Edge database to facilitate forecasts, prospect analysis, donor research and segmenting donors and ensure appropriate recognition of all donors and volunteers.
Working collaboratively with staff and Board to interact with donors, business and community leaders, private foundation officers and the media. Recruiting, training and supervising any development staff, interns and/or volunteers that work for the Development office.
In conjunction with the President/CEO, facilitating Board and committee participation in fundraising activities.
Researching and identifying new sources of foundation and corporate support, preparing grant proposals,
following up with funding sources on proposal submissions, and preparing grant reports.
Developing, maintaining, updating, and executing a public relations and marketing plan, including website,
online, mobile, and social media platforms, solicitation materials, newsletters, press releases, and other
appropriate activities. uch other duties as may be necessary to accomplish the Development goals.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree or higher.
Three to five years experience in the fundraising field, and demonstrated success in fundraising, donor
cultivation and solicitation. Ability and willingness to personally ask for contributions.
Strong written and oral communication skills, and familiarity with PR, marketing and external relations.
Skill in motivating others, including volunteers, prospective donors, Board members and development
leadership.
Strong organizational and analytical skills, outstanding interpersonal skills, and demonstrated experience in
managing people and budgets.
Computer literacy and familiarity with fundraising software.
Skill in exercising initiative and independent judgment, as well as handling a large number of activities
simultaneously.
Some night and weekend work as required.
